We were welcomed with Frank Sinatra type music playing outside which already set the tone and helped to usher us in from the cold winter air.
There are a few different rooms at 5 Rooms, hence the name, and we sat in the room directly on your right as you walk in. I was happy to see a fire going as there is nothing better than going to a restaurant in winter with a fire place.
It is a great place for a date night as the decor theme is that of ‘contemporary opulence perfectly combined with the rich history of a bygone era… a complete marriage of old and new.’ This sets the mood perfectly for a romantic, upmarket yet unpretentious dinner.
They have a great winter special on at the moment and we made sure to take advantage of it. You can have a 2 course set meal for R160 or 3 course for R200. We opted for one 3 course meal which we shared and I went for the Slow Braised Lamb Shank with mashed potato from their Winter Specials menu.
We started with the calamari which was delicious. Being one of our usual menu items to order, I have to admit that I’m a bit of a calamari snob but this definitely lived up to my standards. It had a bit of a kick which was good.
For mains, my husband had the fish which was Silver fish. Not having heard of Silver fish before we were a bit apprehensive but he went for it and enjoyed it. Personally, I found it a bit too fishy tasting for me but that’s just me. My lamb was soft and tender and I enjoyed it.
One of our favourite desert items to order is chocolate brownie so of course, having gone for the 3 course meal, we ended our feast with this. All I can say is…YUM! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Although our waiter definitely seemed like he was new, he was still very sweet and overall the service was good. I have been a couple of times in the day but never before at night and have been wanting to try it out for a while. Whenever we have thought of going there, it has felt a bit pricey for us for just a normal night out but with their winter specials, it really makes it more affordable.
Overall, a really good place to go for date night. When you book, try get a table by the fire especially on these cold winter nights, snuggle up with your loved one and enjoy!
