After what seemed like an endless summer, winter is officially in full force in Cape Town as every day seems to be colder than the one before. Although cold, we’re still hoping and holding on for more rain to descend on us in the next few months so bring it on winter! If you’re still wondering what to do for date night this month or need some fresh inspiration, I hope you find it here.
Although it is incredibly tempting to just stay in and cuddle up when it’s cold outside, it’s important not to forget about planning something special for date night even if it doesn’t involve leaving the house! Although with all that’s going on in Cape Town, you might just have to get yourself off that couch and out into the world.
Do A Puzzle Together
You know how some things are meant for the kids but you end up finding yourself getting totally into it yourself? This happened with us just recently with a puzzle. Way back when, BC (before children) my husband and I had a 1000 piece puzzle out on the table that we would work on intermittently until we completed it. Just recently, I bought a 500 piece puzzle for my kids which was a bit tricky for them so we ended up spending the night ‘helping’ them out while they were sleeping. Turns out puzzles can be quite addictive and a fun thing to do together. Thankfully our girls were grateful for the help and we were grateful to have had the time doing a puzzle together which, with the fire going, some snacks, and drinks is a great way to spend a date night at home together.
Châteauneuf du Pape Tasting & Paired Dinner at the Aubergine Restaurant (28 July)
Contemporary seasonal cuisine meets a selection of fine wines from Robin’s cellar at the renowned Aubergine Restaurant this month. Tickets are rather steep but if wining and dining makes your heart skip a beat, then it might be well worth splurging a bit.
Hearty Soup Specials at Wiesenhof Bistro & Restaurant
If you’re looking for something more economical, Wiesenhof has a selection of delicious-sounding soups to feast on for R55 each.
Winter Special at The Primal Eatery (Tuesday – Thursdays)
For R450, you can enjoy 2 Sirloin steaks, a bottle of wine and dessert (such as a warm apple crumble with smoked cinnamon ice cream). Sounds like the perfect comfort food for a chilly winter’s evening!
Ocean Eleven Guest House Accommodation in Hermanus
Enjoy a romantic night out-of-town at this 5-star guest house. You’ll also receive a complimentary English breakfast. What’s great about this accommodation is how close it is to Hermanus Beach and Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Although it’s a bit too cold to go swimming, a walk through nature with your partner may be just what the doctor ordered for you two! And with whale season coming up soon, this sounds like a perfect time to organise that getaway.
Overnight Dinner and a Movie at The 12 Apostles in Camps Bay
This one-night package includes a three-course dinner at the Azure Restaurant or The Cafe Grill, followed by one of your favourite films in a private cinema. Popcorn, ice-cream, rich drinking chocolate, milkshakes and other sweet treats will be served throughout the movie. You will also be able to make use of the temperature-controlled plunge pools at the hotel spa. Having recently experienced this package ourselves (Our ‘Overnight’ Date Night At The Twelve Apostles Hotel), I can highly recommend it! If staying over is not possible for you, keep an eye out for their special Date Night Event ( 3 course meal, movie and a gift of The Love Box) happening on the 27th July. You can email them for more info.
The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show (01 – 16 July)
If you’re a Whitney Houston fan, you’ll be pleased to know that this popular show returns to Cape Town to celebrate the beloved pop diva. You can expect a full live band, dancers and all the theatrical bells and whistles to accompany the hit singer’s greatest hits.
80s Party at a Touch of Madness (08 July)
Do sequins, glitter and velvet make you happy? If so, why not take a trip down memory lane for date night and do something a little retro? Touch of Madness is a cosy venue in Observatory with wooden floors, high ceilings and plenty of comfy places to sit inside. This month they’re bringing you an 80’s themed party with a live DJ. Entrance is free before 10, or R30 thereafter. The best part about this is, of course, the chance to dress up and show off your 80’s fashion!
Grassy Spark at Cafe Roux (15 July)
Cafe Roux in Noordhoek is hosting the popular local band Grassy Spark this month. They’ll be performing a unique and intimate show at this ambient venue. Come early and grab a bite to eat or some drinks. Having been to Cafe Roux before for their live intimate shows, I can totally recommend this as a great date night.
HintHunt – The Escape Game
Sometimes it’s fun to do something totally out-the-box and that’s exactly what HintHunt is. Known as “The Escape Game,” it’s a bonding experience that forces you to work together with your team to solve puzzles, follow clues and open locks in a short period of time. The games are said to be challenging but exciting and designed for groups of 3 to 5, meaning it’s the perfect idea for a double date night.
Asteroid: Mission Extreme at the Planetarium (01 – 23 July)
Kick back and enjoy a show at the Planetarium. This one will take you and your partner on a mission of discovery and adventure through space. There’s an 20:00 show which gives you just enough time to grab a quick meal before it starts at the many restaurants around. I definitely want to make this date night happen.
PS. If you really can’t make it out the house, you can always just create a special date night at home with The Love Box. Get it delivered straight to your door and date night is sorted! You’re welcome 😉
