The 20th June is winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. Here in Cape Town we can feel the temperatures dropping, the mornings getting darker and the sun going down earlier. Don’t let that stop you from going out though as there is still lots happening in the month of June. While staying on the couch in front of the fire is very appealing (you’ve literally got to tear me away) when you get out, it is always worth it. Trust me, if I can do it…YOU can do it!
Ok, so when staying at home does get the better of you, at least make the time together count. When you’ve been together with someone for so long, you think you know everything there is to know about them. But do you really? On one of our date nights, when it felt like our conversation was feeling a bit stifled, I asked my husband to tell me something about him that he thinks I don’t know. And then he asked me the same question. It was a great way to have a meaningful conversation as it opened us up and took us away from talking about the same old stuff and lead us to discuss various other topics. Here is a ‘List of 100 questions to ask your partner on date nights‘ from Lifehack to give you some inspiration.
Kyoto Garden Sushi
I have just found out that Kyoto Garden Sushi have their winter special back on. 3 courses and a glass of wine for R170! I’m super excited about this and will definitely be taking advantage of it this winter! We went last year and had one of our best date nights here. It was truly delicious. You can read my review here or have a look at my last year’s roundup of our 5 best date nights. Either way, I highly recommend it as a special and beautiful date night together.
You’ve just got to love winter and all these amazing winter specials. Cheyne’s is another restaurant we went to last year (read my review here) where we had a truly memorable dining experience. So, once again, I was really excited to see their winter special that they have on at the moment where you get 4 courses for R200! That’s a really good deal and yes, I hope to be taking advantage of this one as well!
Brad’s Grill Steakhouse
I haven’t been to Brad’s Grill Steakhouse but I have heard good things about it. We went to Harfield Village last year for a date night and definitely would love to return there as it has such a quaint atmosphere which I loved. They have an early bird special between 6-8pm and if you book through their Facebook page, you get a free bottle of wine per couple. They also have a fireplace which is a huge bonus in winter!
Last month we were very lucky to have enjoyed a 3 night getaway (without the kids!) in Greyton. We stayed at the Post House which was just lovely and which I can happily recommend as a place to stay especially if you’re able to get away just the 2 of you. In fact, I have a great giveaway at the moment where the 2 of you could win a night away at The Post House! 🙂
I just had to tell you about this deal from Daddy’s Deals as, besides the price which is really good, this is where we got married nearly 10 years ago 🙂 So, granted we were there 10 years ago and we stayed in the honeymoon suite so I really can’t tell you what it’s like now as a place to stay but it has very fond memories for us. Wellington is a beautiful place to explore and the garden at Diemersfontein is lovely. It’s what attracted us to it as our wedding venue. If you go, enjoy!
The Cape Wheel
I recommended this for April Date Nights but back then I didn’t know about their special so I’m recommending it again. You get 15% off your meal at Balduccis or Gibsons with presentation of your ticket. Or 50% off if it’s your birthday. Either way, it looks like it could be a fun thing to do and you can snuggle up close to keep warm 🙂 Click here for more info.
Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend (2-5 June)
I hope it’s not too late for this one but if you don’t know about it yet it’s the Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend happening from the 2nd-5th June. It is so beautiful out that way and it looks like there’s lots going on to keep everyone happy. If you can get accommodation at this late stage, I am sure it will be a fun filled weekend. Click here for more info.
Tulbagh- Christmas in Winter (25-26 June)
For most people Christmas is synonymous with cold and snow. For us South Africans, the only snow on Christmas we see is in the movies that we watch. So, it seems, in order to bring the ‘christmas in the snow’ feel to us here down South, Tulbagh is having their annual Christmas in Winter festival. We spent some time in Tulbagh a year ago and it is such a lovely little town in beautiful surroundings. I have no doubt that this will be a fun festival and although snow is not a guarantee, a cold Christmas feel most certainly is. Click here for more info.
Bay Harbour Market
I love it when a place ticks more than just one box. Friday nights at the Bay Harbour market is one of those places as it is vibey so you get the feeling of being out and about with some really good food as well. We went this past weekend and had delicious spicy coconut chicken soup from Zoop who make the yummiest soups. I definitely recommend it as a fun date night just the two of you or with another couple. Defending The Caveman (14-24 June)
I saw this show many years ago and remember at the time enjoying it. As quoted from the Baxter site,”Tim Plewman once again dons the Caveman’s skins and steps onto stage to add to the longest-running and most successful solo comedy in SA theatre history. By Rob Becker and described as the perfect date comedy, “Caveman” is so much more than a laugh a minute show, it’s a philosophy rapped in a tour de force performance.” Click here for more info.
There are too many great shows happening at Alexander Bar for me to pick just one for June. Depending on what you’re in the mood for will dictate what you are drawn to. If you are looking for some beautiful soulful music, then ‘Tigerlily’ Josie Field and Laurie Levine Live are a good choice. I have seen them play before and they are lovely. Have a look here at what’s happening in June and book whatever tickles your fancy 😉
Encounters South African International Documentary Festival (2-12 June)
If you are interested in documentaries, then this is the festival for you. Taking place at Cinema Nouveau Waterfront and the Labia, make sure to book your tickets if you don’t want to miss out. Click here for more info.
District Six – Kanala
David Kramer’s District Six – Kanala at the Fugard Theatre has been extended to the 3rd July. The reviews are very good and from the looks of things on their Facebook page, tickets are selling quickly. So book now if you don’t want to miss out on this production. If you haven’t done so already, you can read a couple of date nights all wrapped up in one for our lovely date night at the Fugard Theatre. Click here for more info.
So that’s just a bit of what’s on offer in June. PLEEEASE let me know of anything else happening or if you do something that’s worth recommending. We are always looking for different things to do for date nights and it’s just little old me trying to find what’s going on out there so do SHARE if you have some other ideas or feel free just to comment to say hi or whatever. And don’t forget to subscribe to my (at this point) monthly newsletter below for more date night ideas and all things related. Keep loving each other!
*Disclaimer: I have not been paid to recommend any of these places. I will always disclose if I am paid or receive something for free. I have an affiliate with Daddy’s Deals which means if you book with them by clicking on my link, I get a little something. However, I only recommend their deals if it is somewhere I would book and like to go myself. All recommendations are based on my opinion or experience so please bear that in mind when experiencing them for yourself.
