Maybe it’s the fact that February was a “short” month or simply that the days are speeding by, but it’s hard to believe that we’re already in March! As summer slowly dwindles to an end, there are still some warm days and nights to be enjoyed. Cape Town, as usual, is full of fun and exciting things to do for date night. So get yourselves a babysitter and go out and explore some of the awesome activities on offer. I’ve put together my favourite date night ideas for the month below – right now it seems to be a serious boom in music and theatre attractions in the city, so it may be worth checking these out for yourself.
Make a playlist together
Last year my husband and I had a seriously rocking party at home. We spent some time beforehand putting a playlist together and everyone commented on how awesome the music was. It felt really good that we had worked together on that and it was a fun experience as well. Now we have a great playlist when we’re in the mood for dancing which is such a bonus! Set aside a night, get comfy and put a playlist together.
Cabaret Theatre and Dinner at Gate69
This intimate show and dinner is the perfect setting for date night with fine cuisine and world-class entertainment. Located in Bree Street, Gate69 is fast becoming one of Cape Town’s trendiest hotspot and is often described as a “mini Moulin Rouge.” Experience the magic for just R550 per person for the entire month of March. Dinner includes mezze served on a double-tiered lazy Susan with a separate hot soup and bread as well as soft served ice cream for dessert.
Cruise and Dine
Do something different for date night and indulge in a delicious dinner at the V&A Waterfront followed by a serene cruise in the bay. Cruise and Dine works with three restaurants, namely The Greek Fisherman, City Grill Steakhouse and Melocino.
Getaway to The Wild Mushroom Boutique Hotel
If you’re looking for a romantic night out the house, this five-star luxury hotel in the Winelands is the perfect destination. Right now there’s a Daddy’s Deal special on offer which lets you enjoy a one night stay for two at the boutique hotel along with breakfast, wine tasting at Stellenbosch Hills and a complimentary bottle of wine for R999.
One night stay at Hawksmoor country-styled farmhouse
From the looks of it, this rustic and charming home in the winelands just exudes romance and intimacy. Located on the Matjieskiul Farm in Stellenbosch, this great deal allows you and your partner to spend a night here and be treated to breakfast – you can even make use of the swimming pool if the weather is warm. The guesthouse is in close proximity to quaint coffee shops and boutiques. Hawksmoor House also offers wine tastings, delicious dinners and cheese and meat platters to keep your bellies happy.
Cape Folk and Acoustic Music Festival at Kirstenbosch Gardens
Enjoy an evening of musical storytelling featuring 16 local folk and acoustic artists at this anticipated event. Apparently, last year’s instalment sold out on both nights – so you know it’s going to be good. Plus it’s always a treat to visit the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens. You can find out how to book your ticket here.
Monday Night Magic
Every Monday, Africa’s premier magic theatre hosts a night filled with magic and illusion at Truth Coffee HQ. This intimate event features performances from top local and international magicians. Enjoy the show with your loved one – and some coffee or craft beer in hand.
The Galileo Open Air Cinema
This open air cinema experience takes place at different venues around Cape Town, including the V&A Waterfront and Hillcrest Quarry. A variety of movies are screened – from gripping dramas to romantic comedies and old-school classics. There’s also great food and drinks on sale. So bring your partner, cuddle up and enjoy.
Starlight Classics – Somerset West
A classical concert under the stars certainly sounds romantic! This proudly South African line-up includes some big names like lyric soprano Pumeza Matshikiza, Jacques le Roux and the local queen of rock, Karen Zoid. Bring your picnic blankets and enjoy this spectacular evening at Vergelegen with the one you adore.
Cape Town Carnival
This colourful parade is Cape Town’s biggest street party, taking place at the Fan Walk. This year’s theme is Amaza – Ocean Odyssey which looks like a lot of fun. Expect performers, musicians, moving floats and loads of excitement. If you’re in the mood for a more vibey and festive date night experience, then this is a must.
Blue Man Group – Experience Awesome at Grand West
The Blue Man Group has toured the globe and is known to be a really memorable experience. The award-winning global sensation combines comedy and theatre with rock and dance party elements, and is complete with a live band. With such stellar reviews, it’s definitely worth checking out!
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival
This is the flagship Jazz event within Cape Town and is often referred to as “Africa’s Grandest Gathering” because of how well attended it is. This year marks its 17th instalment and it’s gearing up to be a big one with more than 5 stages and 40 performing artists. The event takes place over the course of 2 days on the last weekend in March.
Sleeping Beauty at the Fugard Theatre
Watch this iconic fairy-tale story be brought to life by the Bolshoi Ballet. The show, which is screened as part of the 2017 Fugard Bioscope World Arts Season, is said to be a classic. With luxurious sets and costumes, it’ll be hard not to get swept away by the fantasy, magic and – of course – true love’s kiss.
So much to do so definitely no need to do the same old for date night. Get out together! Have fun together! Spend some proper time together!
