Doing this spontaneous date night thing seems to be becoming a thing of ours. We actually had booked a place for Saturday night but after being at a friends braai the whole day and the fact that the restaurant was quite a smart place which we weren’t in the mood for, we decided to cancel it. Which left us with our baby sitter coming but us having no idea what we were going to do.
You must know that when I tell you about our date nights, I really do try to be as honest as possible about them and about our experience.(of course, some things I keep private) Sometimes I think people must think, ‘really, are they always so good?’ But to be honest, they really have been. I’ve almost been wanting to have a bad one so that I can write the post about that and you’ll know I’m telling it like it is. So, I was almost excited at the thought that this was going to be one of those date nights. (Yes, I’m a bit demented.)
It started off with me being a bit irritable because, well, just because. And actually, I didn’t totally feel like being spontaneous because I was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like having to think of where to go. Also, being spontaneous in season in Cape Town is not the best idea as things are getting busy down here. We started off trying Kitima but they were fully booked. After trying a couple of other places we ended up going to Loco Lounge in Harfield Village. Once we had made the decision, I immediately felt better.
It was exactly what we felt like. Quiet, quaint, quirky, cosy, and unpretentious. I have to admit I have never eaten in Harfield Village before so it was great going somewhere totally new. We sat upstairs on the deck which was very romantic and lovely. We walked past the inside and while it looked nice, I did feel like it maybe lacked a bit of atmosphere and romance for a date night out especially compared to the deck outside.
Having never been there before our waiter told us that everything is preservative free, as organic as possible and made with fresh ingredients. He had me at preservative free and organic. Loved that!
We had the Duck Springroll Fingers, Squidlettes, Angry Prawns, Camembert Forest Mushroom and El Jalapeno (chilli poppers). We were warned that the prawns weren’t deveined so I can’t fault them for that but next time I know I prefer them to be deveined first as it made opening them a bit tricky. While the food was all very good and we enjoyed everything we ate, I did feel the flavours were just lacking a bit to make it really amazing.
While I am trying to be very good with bikini season practically on our door step, I couldn’t resist trying the Bad bad bad Brownies. They were good but didn’t quite make it on my ‘best brownie’ list. We still managed to not leave one drop on our plate of course.
Our bill came to a lot more than what I realised but we probably have no one to blame for that but ourselves. Our date nights are becoming quite expensive and is something we need to look at for next year.
All in all though, the service was good and friendly, the place lovely and welcoming and I would definitely recommend it as a cool place for a date night out and yes, we really did enjoy ourselves 🙂
