A couple of weekends ago we were treated to an Overnight Dinner and Movie Package at The Twelve Apostles Hotel…and what a treat it was! Our plan was to get there at 2pm for check in to enjoy every minute we could but unfortunately due to the life of parents, we only managed to get there after 4. My first tip to you, if you can get there earlier, do it! Trust me, you want to enjoy and savour all the time you can here.
By the time we got to the hotel, I was feeling a bit frazzled from all the rushing of fetching our girls from school, trying to get them ready, dropping them at granny, but from the moment we stepped in, I felt like I had to change gear. In the best possible way.
From being greeted at the door, to someone carrying our bags, to being led to sit down for check in, offered something to drink, I felt like I could step away from the role of being the one taking care of everyone’s needs to being the one whose needs were being taken care of. We were being served, fussed over, made to feel special…and I’ll be honest, I loved every minute of it! As a parent, it is always a rare occurrence and feeling to feel that you can totally relax and have absolutely nothing to think about or take care of. It is all done for you…pure bliss and just what we needed!
After checking in, going over our dietary requirements, telling us about their pillow menu (the most genius thing ever!) and being shown around the hotel, we were led to our room with a sea view which was just gorgeous. The decor is luxurious yet comfortable and warm. It is one of the things that I really like about the hotel; its definite sense of luxury yet in a very understated and unpretentious way. This extends through to the staff and overall feel of one’s stay here. There is an attention to detail throughout and a real understanding of wanting to give you, the guest, the best experience and service possible.
My only critique of the sea view room is that when you open the doors it’ s a bit noisy due to the road traffic but I am super sensitive when it comes to sound. When the doors are closed though, you can’t hear a thing.
After relaxing in our room a little while, we went to the Leopard Bar as although we were going to be having dinner soon, I was starving and couldn’t wait till then. After some lovely tea (they have so many exotic beautiful choices), snacks, and live music playing, it was already time for our dinner so we went back to our room to change and get ready.
As some of you may know, due to health reasons, I have had to cut out gluten, dairy and sugar from my diet. This means that going out for dinner is a lot more tricky than what it used to be as there are still so many restaurants who do not cater for these requirements. In fact, one of my reservations about experiencing the Overnight Stay package with a 3 course meal included was: ‘what was I going to eat?’ Well, if I tell you I was blown away by the amount of effort that went into catering for my (and my husband’s) dietary requirements, it is an understatement. What really stood out for us was the seed crackers and gluten free bread with a peppadew dip that was simply divine. Besides being delicious, it was such a refreshing change that there was an alternative to the normal ‘bread and butter’ served and we were both suitably impressed. It is standard practice that they request dietary requirements for both resident and non resident guests so if you are wanting to go there for dinner and have special dietary requirements, be sure to let them know beforehand. They also have a ‘Taste Menu’ which is completely vegan. It looked quite delicious. I won’t go into everything we ate but I will just tell you it was all delicious and very generous. There are no teeny portions being served here that you might normally expect from a fine dining restaurant. We were completely stuffed after our meal but very satisfied.
As we had got to dinner later than intended (Hmmm..I see a bit of a pattern here), we got to our movie later than intended as well. As we were the only ones watching, it was not a problem. Once again, we felt completely spoilt as we were taken to their lovely intimate private cinema and offered milkshakes, drinks and popcorn. I must admit, we were quite full from our meal, yet we found some space for popcorn and tea…I just can’t do a movie without popcorn…right? We watched The Notebook which was the perfect date movie and having seen it many years ago, completely loved it still.
The best thing about our movie ending was being able to walk right back to our room and get straight into bed! No getting into a car and having to drive back home! I seriously loved that feeling of everything being right there and not having to mission anywhere. From snacks, to dinner to movie, to bed…to breakfast the next morning. We had brought our takkies and costume with as we had plans of maybe going for a walk in the morning or a swim in the heated Spa pools…but alas, a morning relaxing in bed was what we did instead and what was definitely called for.
As we didn’t need to rush off to fetch our girls (in fact, they spent another night at granny!) after breakfast and checking out, we explored the hotel a bit further. There is a walk that one can do which leads directly from the back of the hotel right onto the mountains. It’s only when you go walking in the mountains that you fully appreciate the true gift of the hotel which is quite literally nestled at the foot of the mountains. One is often so focused on getting the sea view on their outside deck (which is beautiful) but the mountain offers its own special sense of magic. The views from up there are quite spectacular. We came across their picnic spots where someone had a picnic all set up as they were going to propose. What a spot! Definitely a perfect date night or special occasion thing to do.
After wandering around a bit more, we found the hammocks and ended up chilling here for quite a while. The hammocks are perfectly placed in between the trees with the mountain towering over you and the sound of the birds lulling you into a most relaxed space. Recently, for one of my monthly date night ideas at home, I gave the idea of just being together. Not necessarily doing anything but just being. And this is exactly what we did. We lay in the hammock together, without even talking really but enjoying the time together of just BEING with each other which is so rare in our busy lives.
Before spending the night here, I never completely got the idea of spending a night in a hotel in your own city, but after just one night here, I completely get it now. Although we were so close to home, it felt like we had been transported to another place completely. A place of relaxation, spoils, luxury, letting go, and being able to just be together. We weren’t even there for 24 hours yet it felt like we’d been away for longer. I am truly grateful for our beautiful, special time here and I can highly recommend it if you are wanting to get away for the night, experience something a bit different, and enjoy some quality time together.
The Overnight Dinner and Movie Package starts at R1730 per person which includes a 3 course meal, a movie, an overnight stay, breakfast and an hour session in their Spa’s saltwater flotation pool and plunge pools. For more information, have a look here at the Overnight Dinner and Movie Package.
