This feature of ‘Your Stories’ is very special to me as I interview my very amazing cousin Pascal Righini and his equally amazing girlfriend Lauren Waller. Pascal is lead singer of The Plastics, an indie retro rock band who are a truly talented, down-to-earth, and just lovely bunch of guys. Lauren is a graphic designer and together, they make a very beautiful and creative couple. Before Pascal and Sasha (his equally amazing brother who plays drums) were the Plastics, they had a punk band called The Hoax. They actually play quite a significant role in our relationship as I invited my husband on our 2nd date ever 13 years ago (yes, I asked him out) to go watch them play at The Purple Turtle! While the Purple Turtle and the mosh pit were not quite my scene back then (does it still exist?) or the setting for a romantic 2nd date, it was fun and clearly worked! 🙂
What I especially loved about this interview was getting to know a bit more about Pascal and Lauren’s relationship as these are not normally questions I would ask them at family gatherings. Thank you Pascal and Lauren for sharing your very beautiful connection with me and everyone else! Love you guys! xxx
1. How long have you been together?
We have been together for 7 years.
2. How did you meet?
Pascal: We actually met through a mutual friend many years ago but we were both more shy back then so didn’t make much of a connection then years later we met again through friends at Lauren’s college who recommended Lauren as a great designer to help my band make our first CD design. We had a few meetings about the project and started to really hit it off , we had a nice flirtatious vibe going so after the project was over I asked Lauren to my 21st birthday party and that’s when we first kissed 🙂
Lauren: We met properly through a mutual friend who I was at college with, and who was one of Pascal’s best friends from school. We had met briefly in High School, but only through friends of friends and never really had a conversation. When we met in college, Pascal had recently just formed his band, The Plastics, and I was “hired” as their designer. We were attracted to each other right from the start but both played hard to get for a while (I think mainly me). But the more time we spent with each other, the more we couldn’t deny how we felt 🙂 Once I got to know him there was no going back for me.
3. What was the first thing that attracted you to each other?
Pascal: Initially it was all about looks (Sorry, haha) and then once we got to know each other we realised how much we connected on a romantic, creative and intellectual level and also how much we could learn from each other. I was attracted to Lauren’s spirit from the very beginning. She initially comes off as shy but she has a light spirit and a happy soul and it’s absolutely contagious to me.
Lauren: Definitely his looks, but also his laid-back, “calm and cool” personality. He had a confidence about him which was very attractive. He also was (and still is) the singer of a band – soooo yeah 🙂
4. How do you stay connected?
Pascal: We make time for each other and are always giving each other positive loving thoughts, advice and inspiration. We give each other room to be our own people and this makes our connection stronger all the time. We feel like we can be independent but still support each other and push each other to achieve and do bigger and better things. We like to take on mutual projects. We do photography together , cook together , build things, plan trips together. That and lots of kissing.
Lauren: We speak to each other everyday, and we send each other LOTS of loving messages. We’re similar in that we love staying connected and being with each other, but also both need our own space sometimes, to be our own people, and so we’re able to give that to one another easily. Our relationship started with us working together, so I think that helps a lot – we do a lot of our own projects and plan things all the time. I feel like we know each other so deep down that we’re always able to understand what that person needs – which keeps us connected without us even trying.
5. What is your idea a of a perfect date night?
Pascal: Music, great food (probably home made), wine, stars , talking about art, ideas and the future.
Lauren: Going for an evening walk, making a picnic and sitting under the stars and talking and cuddling for hours, followed by a delicious cup of tea or coffee and a piece of chocolate on the couch at home 🙂
Here is one of their music videos to give you an idea of what they’re all about. I really struggled to choose as their videos are so quirky and brilliantly done but I settled on Best Pretenders, just one of their songs which have been played on Radio 5. I also posted another one, Caves as it shows the band a bit more plus it is ridiculously cool! 🙂
